متن کاملHigh - redshift obscured quasars
Using mid-infrared and radio criteria, we select a sample of candidate z ∼ 2 obscured quasars. Optical spectroscopy confirms about half of these as type-2 quasars, and modelling the population suggests 50-80% of the quasars are obscured. We find some flat radio spectrum type-2 quasars, and tentative evidence for obscuration unrelated to the torus. Using a similar sample, we also find evidence f...
متن کاملWhat Is the Highest Plausible Redshift of Luminous Quasars?
The recent discoveries of luminous quasars at high redshifts imply that black holes more massive than a few billion solar masses have been assembled already when the universe was less than a billion years old. We show that the existence of these black holes is not surprising in popular hierarchical models of structure formation. For example, the black hole needed to power the quasar SDSS 1044-0...
متن کاملHigh-Redshift, Radio-Loud Quasars
I discuss two programs to study radio-loud quasars at high (z ∼ > 4) redshift. Quasars are the most luminous, non-transient objects known and are observed to the earliest cosmic epochs. At lower redshifts, radio-loud quasars are associated with host galaxies having de Vaucoleurs profiles. By association, identifying and studying a sample of high-redshift, radio-loud quasars provides important c...
متن کاملVLBI imaging of extremely high redshift quasars at 5 GHz
We present very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) images of ten very high redshift (z > 3) quasars at 5 GHz. Most of the sources are resolved and show asymmetric structure. The sample includes 1428+423, the most distant radio loud quasar known to date (z = 4.72). It is barely resolved with an angular resolution of about 2.0×1.4 mas.
